Back to Basics: Health 101 – Nutrition and Digestion

You are what you eat  → You are what you absorb → You are what you don’t eliminate.

What’s the difference between nourishing and fueling your body?

Think of fueling just like putting gas in your car.

Fueling will get you from point A to point B just like putting gas in your car.

Think of nourishing your car as all the other maintenance tasks like oil changes, cleaning the interior, replacing the signal bulbs, etc.

Nourishing provides your body with the appropriate balance of protein, fats, carbohydrates and micronutrients needed for essential cellular functions, giving you energy balance hormones.

How do you nourish your body?

Eat a diet that primarily consists of whole foods and balance your blood sugar.

Unfortunately, most of our food comes from a package and is processed in some way, shape or form. If you can identify the ingredients and if there are fewer ingredients, it’s likely a better option.

Blood Sugar Balance: It doesn’t matter if you are prediabetic, diabetic, or just looking for optimal health, you should be considering blood sugar balance as part of your health and wellness plan.

Why?

Because if you can optimally use the nutrition you’re feeding your body, you will feel better in the long run.

When your blood sugar spikes and then drops, it makes you feel fatigued, nauseous, and generally not well.

Versus if you’re balancing with the correct amount of proteins, fat, & fiber (vegetables), you decrease the spike in blood sugar because those foods take longer to digest and keep you full for longer.

Regarding nutrition, digestion is key to getting the most nutrients out of your food.

Classic symptoms of digestive issues include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Heartburn
  • Acne
  • Sugar cravings
  • Fatigue
  • Skin rashes (e.g. Eczema)
  • Sleep issues
  • Mood disorders
  • Unexplained Weight gain or loss.
